Semester-long project reusing the guts of a Polaroid Now I-Type Instant Camera

Archetype for a new model Polaroid

Fun-loving young women who cherish experiences with their friends. Polaroid allows them to capture those moments in an instant and keep them forever.

They want you to see them using it!

How Might We..

Make the camera more accessible without becoming “generic”

Retain the retro without retreading

Make it iconic so everybody knows it’s a Polaroid

Ideation

I explored how the parts of the camera might be re-arranged

Thinking about my user base, the idea of a purse immediately came to mind.

Is it “Accessible”?

A purse is a sure-fire way that the user could keep the camera handy.

Is it “Iconic”?

A simple silhouette and the identifying rainbow makes me feel that this meets the criteria to become iconic.

“Retro”?

Instead of retreading eras already explored, the concept should play forms reminiscent of the late 90’s and early 2000’s

Part Line Ideation

The most popular selections from my user survey are highlighted.

The rainbow decoration was a very popular feature in interviews. I eventually settled on using a sticker due to production costs, but it limited its application to flat surfaces.

Strap/Handle Design

To achieve the purse-like form I explored integration at various points on the camera body, as well as creating a decorative sleeve that the camera could nest into. I scrapped the idea as I felt it wasn’t in line with Polaroid’s design language.

The purse as a concept should ideally include both cross-body and clutch-style straps so the camera can be carried in a variety of ways.

Two straps is too much

One strap solution

The strap glides through a freely rotating harness inset into the rear of the camera body. Baubles act as stoppers and when pulled from the center create a clutch-style handle. When lifted from the other end, the clutch handle retracts flush to the body forming a proper cross-body or shoulder strap.
