Gingko Lamp

A quick deviation I took from a project for the IHA. I saw this as an opportunity to create a functional object whose main purpose is to be aesthetically and spacially pleasing

Why the Ginkgo?

Forms found in nature can provide us with peace, and a reset from our hectic lives. I wanted to try and bring that inside.

“The Ginkgo stands for resilience, hope, peace, love, magic, timelessness, and long life. Ginkgo is also associated with duality, a concept that recognizes the feminine and masculine aspects of all living things and is often expressed as yin and yang.”

The nodes connecting the leafs intrigue me. and they are almost always connected to 4 leaves whose unique shape begs to be explored

I used Gravity Sketch to help navigate complex three dimensional forms. Here is some of my exploration

Being immersed through VR was a true boon for me when exploring form, and I credit it with helping to make this final iteration possible. Trying to draw this was next to impossible, and my attempts to sculpt using physical materials proved to be more frustrating than teaching myself a new tool and program!

I found that it was difficult to determine and evaluate size using VR, so after finding a form I did construct a rudimentary physical model to get a sense of scale

Touch Conductive Power ON/OFF/Dim
Seemless silicone over-mold on all leaves and stems
Part-line
Weighted base
Warm ambient accent lighting
Satin finish, wipe-clean silicone over-mold for a pleasant touch and a soft daytime appearance

Moving Forward…

I would like to further explore a physical model and address the final size, test lighting configurations and power. Start a dialog with vendors to fully understand production methods for something like this
